BWS Chairman Cornelio Acosta Takes Helm of Caribbean Water Association

Corenlius Acosta, CWWA President: “The Water High Level Forum reinforced the need to reduce water losses, improve service, and protect vulnerable customers while putting our utilities on a stronger financial footing. We cannot ask customers to support investment without showing them how we are using the money better. I believe it was a minister from Antigua and Barbuda calling for stronger participation from CWWA in creating a regional monitoring and benchmarking mechanism.

They want a clearer picture of how our utilities are performing, where assistance is needed, where we should focus our efforts and whether support provided is making a difference. I welcome that call. I will work with the incoming board, our utilities and development partners to to advance a practical mechanism that helps us identify those gaps and respond to them.

The forum also reminded us to invest in preparedness rather than depend on relief especially after disaster strikes. Our decisions must come before the emergency not our explanations afterwards. Thank you for the confidence you have placed in me.

I accept this presidency with pride, gratitude and a clear understanding of the responsibility that comes with it. It is an honor to represent Belize and a privilege to serve this association.”
